Barvas Community Garden and Polycrubs
Polycrubs and garden space for the Barvas community to grow and enjoy their own produce.
A place for growing
The Community Garden was created through a combination of land transferred to the Trust from the local authority, and through funding from the Islands Green Recovery Programme to establish the hardstanding and purchase of 3 polycrubs. A deer fence around the perimeter has been erected to protect the area.
The Polycrubs are divided into 4 areas and rented out to the community on an annual basis. Each polycrub has raised beds suitable for fruit and vegetables.
The garden contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of the area and has been a springboard for planning further development onsite.
Development of the Community Garden
Future development plans
We are looking to expand our 3 Polycrubs, currently in use by the community for growing their own produce, and develop a community garden in the external area around them the polycrubs. This area will have paths around external raised beds and flower beds for people to walk and enjoy watching the produce and flowers grow.
Plans include seating were the public could sit and talk while enjoying the surroundings. The shed will be developed to include a toilet and handwashing station as this would be required if people were staying longer.
It is expected this will support the mental wellbeing of those who use it while also helping with the healthier and lower carbon miles in fruit and vegetables that the public are growing.
